As far as photo information , the M117 CRANK SHAFT counter weight are glinded.
But there would not heve balance hole especially heavy weight Tangsten insert.
The weight should be determin piston and con-rod,metal,pin,ring weights.
I hope you would caliculate and check many times to make good motor.
The v8 DOUBLE PLANE crank is difficult but you can !
im already have abalanced m117 crankshaft but hard to find a 100mm or 102mm piston&con-rod any ideas?!
If you know the specifics (dimensions) you can have custom pistions made quite affordably. I use JE. Last
time I bought a set they were around $100 a hole complete with rings. They may have a source for rods as well.
Why don't you buy the m117 560 pistons ?? or is their an issue that i don't know of ?
I think it would be cheaper.
Also . It might be possible to find an E60 engine in the scrap yards. Look for some comming from japan.
as my info for 6.0L or 6.2L. if i fexed the m117 crankshaft its become 5.6L but to
complete the subject (4 liter or more) as you know the oversize piston of 500E & 560 is
(97.50mm) i must to bring a 100mm pistons or 102mm possible i think,,,,,for this i cant
find the pistons,, and sometimes hard to Explain to shops what i need even MB it
self,,,,,maybe cause of not that care & Experience of my local side.......
To bore or stroke, that's the question.
If you have to bore big Q is who's able to do the proper treatment to the cyl.walls?
And what pistons to use, JE does not have any recomended
piston for the MB alu-sil block, remember that the Mahle/ KS pistons are
ferro coated and has piston-rings made for the cyl. bores. Regular piston
rings will cut the cyl. walls in no time.
Only sensible operation would be bore and fit cast iron liners, then order
custom built forged pistons from any piston manufacturer JE, Wiseco etc.
If the block is good and reusable keep the std. 500 pistons and have to
order, custom-built forged con-rods (they must be 4.9 mm shorter to
compensate for the longer throw 94.8 vs 85 mm) Carillo,Eagle etc.
If #2 , std. bore is decided the con.rods will be the only non stock parts
you can even use std. 500 head gaskets, the cheapest way to get more
displacement 5.6 l + regular head-job with AMG or BRABUS cams you should
see the 400 hp mark or very close to it...........Roger

I've just about completed a major project with my SL, a complete strip down of the
car + repaint to silver +
detailing of suspension, brakes + installation of a stainless steel exhaust system
(headers included). The re-assembly would be done in about 2 weeks, and will post pictures after.
You're correct, with regards to the engine project. However, I'm just thinking of
how best to go thru it, am trying to source an old M117 and a M119 engine assemblies,
so I wouldn't have to experiment with my perfectly good engine. I have most of the
internal new parts for the M119, except for the pistons, con-rods, and I plan to
work on a M117 crank. Found a supplier for "fast road cams" in Europe. As for the
con-rods and pistons, am contemplating after market suppliers, just haven't gotten
around talking details with them.
As far as costs are concerned, I know that it would be expensive, more so with
alternatives like forced induction...just that I like the normally aspirated route
and the look of the stock engine compartment, personally. Still, so many things to
consider, before delving into it, or shelving it all together.
